Authentic Artisanal Products
The Belgian beer we enjoyed after class on Tuesday offers an interesting example of the marketing of authentic artisanal products. The accompanying pamphlet explains that: ‘For a product to qualify as a ‘Trappist’ product, it must be made within the walls of a Trappist Abbey by or under the supervision of the monks. Profit is not the objective. The income is used for their daily life and to maintain the Abbey. A major share of the profits is donated to charities‘. The fact that the monks are supposedly not interested in profit and that they donate a share of the profit to charity are issues that we will further explore in week 2 and in week 4.
