Who Can Afford To Go Cashless?
India has been recently going through an economic and political crisis as the prime minister took an abrupt decision of demonetizing the economy. While the idea was targeted at the rich sections of the population, who are notorious for not paying taxes, as they hide bundles of cash in cupboards, under beds, behind paintings/photographs or even in their bathrooms (a common theme of several Bollywood films!), the impact of this aspiration of a cashless economy has been the worst on poorer sections of the society that have no access to bank accounts, and are often engaged in the informal, unorganised industries. This article looks at the particular impact that the policy has on the poor, illiterate women, as their hidden economies of savings have been abruptly delegitimized.
