Banned Pokémon episode

On December 16, 1997, an episode of the then-unstoppable Pokémon animated series was broadcast in Japan. Barely thirty minutes later, nearly 700 children were on their way to hospital. Caused due to a combination of strobe like flashing of blue, red and yellow it was later found to have induced epileptic fits.

At the time of its airing, Nintendo of America (NOA) was in discussion with Nintendo of Japan to buy the franchise rights to distribute Pokémon to an American/Western audience. The result of this disastrous episode nearly put a stop to the deal. Thankfully discussions continued after an investigation and the rest is history.
