“The Fetishism of Force”

Anne Harrington de Santana, a lecturer at the Cardiff School of Law and Politics, published a work in 2009 entitled, “Nuclear Weapons as the Currency of Power: Deconstructing the Fetishism of Force,” that discusses Marx’s concept of the “fetish” in relation to nuclear weapons as the “embodiment of power.”

Make sure to check out the section on Materiality, as Harrington asserts that the “scarcity” of nuclear weapons is said to imbue them with “social value,” similar to objects that we might fetishize for their inability to be replaced, reifying them as having intrinsic value.
