Commercial Activity as a Christian Virtue
We have talked a lot in class about the idea that there are two distinct separate spheres of business/ home and accompanying profane/ sacred as not being a full reflection of how people live their day to day lives. In this article from a Lay Catholic magazine, the morality of business and work is discussed.
It is mainly a book review of a book written by Father Anthony G. Percy called Entrepreneurship in the Catholic Tradition. There are those who may see the title as a contradiction in terms, images of Jesus and his disciples as those who led ‘pure’ lives ‘untarnished’ by commerce abound. However both the author of the book and the reviewer (also a priest) argue that ,’the church has a long held deep appreciation for this role.’ insisting that ‘Scripture does indeed condemn avarice and the love of money, but not money itself’.
