Cash is already pretty much dead in China

Mainland Chinese stores and services are increasingly centered around mobile pay apps like WeChat Pay and Alipay. The latter has overlooked Paypal and become the world’s largest mobile payment platform in 2013. This article along with a video introduces the development of the mobile payment in mainland China, which I think is helpful to understand Allen and Pryke’s statement about the “digitalised money” including “the potential distancing effects of money, the particular economic rhythms which are exchanged as money circulates, and the fast tempo and simultaneity of financial transactions foreground” (Allen & Pryke 1999, 66).
