Silk Roads – the first global commodity chains

Drawing on this week’s reading, we can ask ourselves when and how these extensive global trade networks and the countless local dynamics they bring about even started. This week Peter Frankopan, Oxford Professor of Global History, author of ‘Silk Roads: A New History of the World’ gave a talk at the Ashmolean. Historians have tried to trace back various object’s trajectories and have revealed that not only goods but also broad ideas such as religious faith were transmitted on a global level, namely along the Silk Roads. It is through the analysis of symbolism in Art that we can try to retrace these dynamics – the Imagining the Divine Exhibition is a unique collection of such objects and will be closing on the 18th of February – so last chance for all of you to go!
