The Global Farm – Where in the world does our food come from and why?
I am slightly ahead of the curve here as this Radio 4 programme fits nicely with week 7 (Challenging Commodification: The morality of consumption), but I wanted to share it now in preparation, to help you to begin to think about global food networks, and the morality of consumption in a highly digestible form (excuse the pun!) It also ties in with much of what we have discussed so far about commodities and production. So listen to it when you are exercising or getting the bus somewhere…
If you only have time to listen to 1, I would recommend part 3, which looks at consumer behaviour and includes interviews with several social scientists:
What’s the difference between a consumer and a citizen? Research suggests many of us talk in an environmentally conscious way outside the supermarket, then turn into ruthless bargain hunters once we’re inside. Charlotte Smith ends her look at global food value chains by exploring how we shop, and how much influence we have over where our food comes from.
