Tourism and/in the City

This New York Times photo-essay is described in its byline in this way: ‘From the roses of Granada to herring in Amsterdam to a hike above Athens, writers share the draws that pull them back time and again.’ (NYT, April 18 2014)
I thought this was particularly interesting because the visual presentation of tourist experiences from diverse European adventures portray not just a sense of the authentic but also (and more importantly) the alternative, individualistic and distinct tourist experience.
I started to question however, the extent to which these experiences actually are and/or can continue to remain what they had intentionally intended to be: alternative, individualistic and distinct. How distinct are they really? Do they not became normative over time? Prescriptive, even?

A very interesting take on the photo-essay indeed; the short videos placed in between still images work really well, especially for depicting food.
The content of the article reminded me of the recent trend for local people to offer tourists a guided tour of their city. See: http://www.toursbylocals.com/?s=AW_18B_021_%2Blocal%20guides&gclid=CMb11ey58b0CFdShtAod72UA9g
