WK1 – Anarchy?

Thank you again everyone for making our class this morning ‘just perfect’. The presentation was truly ‘epic’ (and there have been quiet some extraordinary OiM performances over the years!) and all your generous contributions made it a very stimulating experience.

In our discussions about potential alternative models for creating a more equal society a few books and papers were mentioned. I have listed 3 of them below.

1.Ferguson, J. 2014. Give a Man a Fish.

A classic in which he expands on the social welfare programs in southern Africa (ie. states make cash payments to their low income citizens).Link in SOLO

2. Dorling D. & A. Koljonen. 2020. Fintopia: What can we learn from the world’s happiest country.

Dorling is Geographer at Oxford who draws on statistic to trave the remarkable turn around the welfar state in Finland since the 1990s. link in SOLO

I also interviewed him for the Disobedient Buildings project at Dorling Podcast

3.Graeber, D. 2004. Fragments of an anarchist anthropology 2004 | Chicago.

Finally I mentioned the interesting work being done about the eruption of solidarity after the financial crisis of 2008, especially in Greece. This special issue of the journal etnofoor has several articles on Greece but also more wider discussions about the concept of solidarity: Link to Etnofoor 2017 (vol 29) Solidarity
